Amgen partners with academia to support Cancer Patient Advocacy Organizations

Amgen has entered into a multi-year partnership with Center for Social Sector Leadership at the University of California (UC), Berkeley's Haas School of Business to introduce a graduate-level course on gauging outcomes of cancer patient advocacy education and support programs.

Known as ‘Social Impact Metrics’, the MBA course is created with a view to help nonprofit organizations measure effectiveness of their drives, stated to be critical in keeping with rising challenging on the fronts of donor environment.

University of California San Francisco Global Health Services deputy director and the Haas faculty member Colin Boyle said: "Establishing meaningful metrics is critical for nonprofits to improve their impact on the lives of those they serve and demonstrate results to funders.

The course curriculum aims to create a set of measurement best practices capable of being adopted across cancer nonprofit community and beyond.

Center for Social Sector Leadership faculty director Nora Silver said: "This partnership, like other experiential learning opportunities at UC Berkeley, gives our students a chance to develop and implement solutions in the real world.

"These types of experiences will prove invaluable to our students as they learn how to forge evidence-based solutions that address current challenges for nonprofits."

Amgen has provided four cancer patient advocacy groups – Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, Cancer Support Community, Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation and Critical Mass – with sponsorships worth $35,000 to assess the impact of an educational or support initiative.

The Berkeley MBA students and faculty will join hands with winners to gauge a specific metrics challenge, suggest a solution and draft an implementation plan during the semester-long course from August to December 2015.
